In the novel, A Long to Water by Linda Sue Park, had two themes for both characters. Salva's theme is individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Nya's theme is nature can present many challenges to humans. Nya is a eleven year old girl who lives with the Nuer tribe and is responsible for getting water for her family but to do this task, she had to walk almost all day to fetch water from a pond, back and forward two times a day for seven months. for the other 5 months of the year, she had to move with her tribe to a big lake camp because the pond will dry out on water but the water from the lake were low and dirty and people got sick from drinking the water. Nya's story got this theme because people from this tribes /had to overcome many nature challenges everyday to get what they want which this case, water. "Nya put the container down and sat on the ground. She always tried not to step on the spiky plants that grew along the path, but their thorns littered the ground everywhere. She looked at the bottom of her foot. There it was, a big thorn that had broken off right in the middle of her heel. Nya pushed at the skin around the thorn. Then she picked up another thorn and used it to poke and prod at the first one. She pressed her lips together against the pain" (p.8). This quote explain exactly why people had to sacrifice themselves and overcome difficult situations that life and nature can present to them everyday just to get what they want. They had to suffer pain and hot weather on their long walks to the pond.

Salva was an elven year old boy who lived in the Dinka tribe with his family in the southern Sudan. His life was not bad, his father was an important man of the village. He went to school like his brothers but when war started he had no other choice than ran away form his village and family to find safety away from gun fighting. Then his journey to find his family started. He walked for survival with other people he overcome many challenges to get food. His story got this theme because despite many challenges they were able to survive and with the war environment that they had to do were remarkable. "The rain was still pouring down, and now bullets wee pouring down as well. The soldiers started shooting into the river, aiming their guns at the people who were trying to get across. Why? Why are they shooting at us? Salva had no choice. He jumped into the water and began to swim" (p.78) This quote represent the theme very well because Salva had to survive and fight for his life getting across the river, overcome the environment he was in by avoiding bullets, crocodiles, and other people surviving and swimming across the river too. Salva never lost hope of getting the other side and save his own life. Both Nya and Salva from A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, had their own themes. One was nature can present many challenges to humans, and the other is individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. The author shows similarities and differences at the same time for both characters but at the end they overcome challenges and fighting for survival.

A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the main idea or theme is individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Nya is a tough, resilient character. She must get water for her village each day. It is a long and difficult walk that takes up a quarter of the day. She has no shoes and often times cuts her feet on the rough terrain. It is also extremely hot in Sudan and the walk makes Nya hot and tired. The walk for the water would not be worth it for many people as the water is dirty and full of bacteria. “Her sickness came from the water the doctor explained.” For Nya and her village the water is a must for daily survival in Sudan. Regardless of the purity of the water, they must drink it or die of dehydration in the hot, dry climate.
Salva lived in a tough part of Sudan. He was forced to leave his family because of the civil war in Sudan. In order to survive, he ran away from his village when government soldiers came in shooting people. He traveled to Ethiopia with other people in his clan. He got a new life and stayed at the refugee camp there. The camp had harsh conditions. “None of the travelers had money or anything of value to trade, so they had to beg for food.” Such a life was difficult for Salva but he knew he had to do it to survive. After several years, he was chosen to go to America and was eventually adopted by his foster parents. To help people in Sudan, he now raises money to build villages and wells. In A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the author shows that survival for Salva and Nya in Sudan was a daily challenge. However, they both overcame the obstacles with strength, determination and a will to live.

  3. A long walk to water by Linda sue park explores a number of themes one of these themes is “nature can present many changes to humans”. Nya’s and Salva’s story shows this theme in many ways. Nya is a little girl that for most of her life she will be walking back and forth to get water from a pond because she can’t get water anywhere else. It takes her all morning for her to get there in back. Walking in southern Sudan where she lives is a risky the area is not safe and is hard to work around these challenges because they are so big. Instead of going to school or playing she has to get water for her family and for herself so that she does not die. “To the pond and back-to the pond and back-nearly a full day of walking altogether. This was Nya’s daily routine seven months of the year. Daily. Every single day.” Nya knows that what she does is hard work and she knows that she is doing the right thing by doing this but she still would like to do something else besides work. But she lives in a place where this is all girls and women do get water while men get food this was the only way they can live. Both Nya and Salva have to work to go around the challenges in their life they may be different but they both have the difficult part in their life’s one way or another. Salvas story is really different at a first glance salva grows up in a house that is a little richer than most others in their town. He lives a pretty good life having fun and is super lucky to go to school. But then war hits in his town while he is in school he has to run away from the town because people are attacking it. He runs away and meets up with others from his town that ran away too. He walks until he gets to camps that help him get on his way so that he doesn’t die. He has to find away in the desert to find all the things he needs to live just like Nya does. “He fetched firewood from the bush and water from the pond”. He has to work with what he has and it is hard but some how he makes it though. Both characters have to deal with the hardships of nature in their own way that is hard and different but they each find a way around it. Whether it’s from someone showing love or them self’s showing that they can do it they each find away to make their lives better.

  4. In the book a long walk to water by linda sue park. The Theme/central idea is “Nature can present many challenges to humans” In Nya’s and Salva’s stories they both have the same central idea. What Nya’s story is about is Nya is a girl who is poor she has to go to this muddy puddle everyday just so her family could survive but then they move to a different place. So Nya’s uncle builds a school and a well that is full of clean fresh water. “Nya’s family moved from their home to a camp near the big lake.” Why this quote is so effective is because they move to a camp near a lake and when there is a campsite there is the woods and trees and stuff.

What Salva’s story is about that he was in school then salva heard a loud bang and then war just started salva had to run into the bush. Then he ran away to a bunch of different places. Then one day he was at the kenya refugee camp and he was chosen to go to america so he now lives at rochester,ny. He is also doing a charity called water for sudan for nuer and dinka people who haves families who need water. “Salva’s village was attacked by war.” Why this quote was so effective toward this message is because sudan was going into war so families had to leave and run away or separate. People like salva was scarce of water and food. So it was hard for salva to survive but he made it. In the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park the central idea was “Nature can present many challenges to humans” that is how Nya and Salva were in their stories.

A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, conveys the theme that nature can present many challenges to humans. In Nya's story, she is a young girl who's job is to constantly walk back and forth to a pond which may be muddy to retrieve water for her family. Her sister and some others in the camp they are at get sick from drinking contaminated water. A man comes to her tribe with his workers to create a well that has clean, running water. Nya's story got this theme across by showing that Nya must walk everyday in order to get water that may be dirty. "The water that filled the hole was filthy, more mud than liquid. It seeped in so slowly that it took a long time to collect even a few gourds full." This quote is so effective toward reinforcing this theme because it shows how much time it takes for a basic human need. Even after all that time, she is only able to get so little water. Salva's story also gets this theme across. In his story, Slava is a boy living in a war infested Sudan and must leave his family behind him, cross the Nile River, walk across a desert, and come to a refugee camp only to be chased off to a crocodile infested river. He finally gets to another camp and is transferred to a family in America. His story gets this theme around because he had to make a huge trip with very little water and food while people had been dying all around him. "His disappearance could only mean one thing. Lion." This quote is so effective toward reinforcing this message because people are being eaten by lions when they sleep. People are picked off at night by wild animals while making a long journey for their safety. A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, states the theme in which nature can present many challenges to humans and it was made clear with people dying from sickness, wild animals, and starvation/dehydration.

  6. In A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Parker there are two characters Nya and Salva, they follow the same theme in the book: Sometimes we have to abandon things that are most important to us in order to survive.Nya lives in southern Sudan with her family after the war. But Nya still have to face the hardship of Southern Sudan. The theme got across the story is when she had to abandon the water for a little while or she has to boil it and get barely anything because the water is dangerous to drink. “Her sickness came from the water[...] If her mother tried to boil such a small amount the pot would be dry long before…”(pg 45) Her little sister got sick because the water was dirty. So they had to choose to give it up and find a cleaner source, boil it and get barely anything, or drink the dirty water and risk getting sick again.

In A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Parker there are two characters Nya and Salva, they follow the same theme in the book: Sometimes we have to abandon things that are most important to us in order to survive. Salva lived in Southern Sudan with his family during the war.
His village and school got attacked and he ran away and found a group of his people. Then he found another group with the tribe of his people after the last group left him. later on he found his uncle and a friend. Then sadly his uncle and his friend died but he kept on going. “No more looking back; it slowed him down.”(pg 9) This is one reason that shows that Salva have to abandon things to survive. He had to leave the school and his village in order to survive or he would be captured or even killed. In the book A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Parker two characters, Nya and Salva, showed a theme:Sometimes we have to abandon things that are most important to us in order to survive.

  7. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park has many themes but on main theme is “ people often do not appreciate what they have until it is gone”. Ny lives in a village in southern sudan at a post war time period. she must constantly look for water to help her and her family survive. “ Nya is still making the two daily trips to the pond”. This quote show that when Nya doesn't have she greatly needs it and goes out to find some. Like Nya, Salva also fits into this theme. Salva starts out with his family and then looses his family for most of the book. That is why Salva realises how much he loved them.” He rushed to the door and looked and looked out, nobody nothing, they had left him, he was alone. That is how that is how I chose this theme for this novel.

  9. A Long Walk to Water

    Linda Sue Park

A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park is a novel that is based on a true story, and shows throughout the story and both characters journeys that individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Nya is a fictionalized character, but was created by real villagers thoughts and feelings of their lives. Nya is an eleven-year-old girl who lives in a Nuer tribe in Southern Sudan. Instead of going to school, she spends most of her day traveling back and forth to collect water in jugs. Nya’s story got the theme of surviving in challenging environments, in remarkable ways, because Nya walks in the heat, barefoot, everyday by herself, to collect water, and when it’s time to drink she cannot because if her mother boils the water to take out all of the germs, the water evaporates, and they can't get a chance to drink it. “ There was only heat, the sun already baking the air though it was long before noon. It would take her the morning if she didn't stop on the way. Heat. Time. And thorns, (1).” I believe that this quote is so effective toward reinforcing this message because it explains how hard it is to walk barefoot with thorns in her way, and being unable to breath because of the heat baking down on her. Also it takes Nya a long time to go and collect the water, and then come back again

Like Nya, Salva also shows in Linda Sue Park’s, A Long Walk to Water, that individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Salva is also an 11-year-old boy at the beginning of the novel but reaches his 20’s at the end. In the beginning of the novel Salva lives in a Dinka tribe in Southern Sudan. Throughout the story Salva goes through an amazing, difficult, and deadly journey to keep himself and his memories of his family alive. Salva learns at the start, that the war is coming into Southern Sudan and in between the war, they burn his village while he is at school learning. His teacher tells everyone to run away and never turn back or youll die, so thats what Salva does. At one point in his journey he meets his Uncle Jewiir, who helps him go on through his journey, unfortunately Uncle doesn't make it because in the Akobo desert the Nuer tribe killed him. Salva surprisingly grew stronger because of this. “A boy next to him grabbed him around the neck and clung to him tightly[..]Salva struggled-kicking, clawing. He’s holding on to me too hard ...I can’t...air...no air left...Suddenly, the boys grip loosened, and Salva launched himself upward[...]When his vision cleared, he saw why the boy had let go: He was floating with his head down, blood streaming from a bullet hole in the back of his neck[...]But there was no time to marvel over this[...]He had to get across somehow. Salva did not know how long he was in the water. It felt like hours. It felt like years, (79).” I believe that this quote is so effective towards reinforcing this message because Slave was able to survive in an astonishing way because of a boy who drowned him in the water so he wouldn’t get shot, and later Salva swam all the way till shore even though it took a long time. A long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, was a very tragic and suspenseful novel. Throughout the story Park’s showed how individuals can survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways by having two characters (one real, another fictionalized) go through long journeys to reach their goals or stay alive.

  10. In the book, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Parks the theme of the story is, individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Naya, one of the main characters shows this in many ways. Ny shows that she survives challenging environments in remarkable ways by getting water for her family every day. Nya’s entire life revolves about getting water. Nya survives the harsh sun of the desert. Nya also survives thorns and she manages to be quick while getting the water so people in her family won’t dehydrate. However she manages not to overwork herself so she won’t dehydrate her self. “She always tried not to step on the spiky plants that grew along the path, but their thorns littered the ground everywhere… Nya knew that going home would take longer than coming had. But she might reach home by noon, if all went well...Nya would now make her second trip to the pond. To the pond and back-to the pond and back- nearly a full day of walking altogether. This was Nyas daily routine seven months of the year," This shows that Nya has to do this all the time and the climate, and the walk are relentless and it is really hard to do. This shows she is strong and can survive in harsh environments. As you can see, Nya can survive in remarkable ways
In A Long Walk to Water there are two main characters, Nya and Salva, the theme of the story stands for both of them, so the theme for Salvas part of the book is that individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Salva walks for months, in the relentless weather, Salva also goes on many dangerous journeys,"The lake's surface was calm, and once the boats had pulled away from the shore, there was not much to see-just water and more water. the paddled for hours...Salva was covered with bites. the worst ones were in the middle of his back, where he couldn't reach to scratch. Those he could reach though he scratched until they bled...He jumped into the water and began to swim...Salva was forced under the surface without time to take more than a quick, shallow breath...They began walking...one step at a time . . . one day at a time. just today-just this day to get through . . . Salva told himself this every day. He told the boys in the group too. ANd one day at a time the group made its way to Kenya. More than twelve hundred boys arrived safely. It took them a year and a half" This quote shows that Salva had to survive a lot and he was strong. It also shows he survived by working together with other people, and the help of his family. Salva survived because of his perseverance. He survived challenging environments in remarkable ways

  11. In Linda Sue Park's "A Long Walk to Water", a story about two people named Salva and Nya. Salva is a boy who loses his family and has to survive during the Sudan war. Nya is a girl who lives in a village with dirty water. Some people try to drink the dirty water and they get sick. Nya usually walks to lakes or pounds to get water but it still dirty. "Nya clapped her hands a long with all the other children but as Nya watched the water spraying out of the borehole she frowned. The water wasn't clear It was brown and heavy looking. It was full of mud". we all need water to survive but Nya only has dirty water which can make her sick.
Salva is a boy who losses his family in the war of Sudan. He struggles to survive for the rest of his village. They traveled to refuges to survive. But it all paid off when Salva came to U.S.A in Rochester, New York to meet his new family. "{...}he tears were not in Salva's eyes. Where had everyone gone? Why had they left without walking him?". This is telling us how Salva ran away and came back to his village and saw it destroyed. This develops in the story when he is trying to survive with the people who avoided the destruction of their village.
In Linda Sue Park's (A Long Walk to Water) is a story about two people trying to survive. Salva a boy who lost his family and his village needs to survive and Nya a girl who lives in a village with dirty water and needs clean water to survive.

In the book A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, the theme is water is our most important resource. Nya is a fictional character in this story who suffers a lot in her life all because of a lack of water. Nya must take a very dangerous walk to a pond which is very far from her home just to get water for her family. When she arrives home with water she must walk back and get more water. For many days, people have been fighting over the land near the pond to get the water. Also, some days the pond dries up and forces Nya and her family to travel to a nearby village next to a lake. When Nya is at the lake she must dig up clay everyday in order to get water for her family and others. Even though the water is very dirty, it is the only water they have so the must drink it. Most of Nya’s life, water is involved and is always a problem for Nya and her family. “The water that filled the hole was filthy, more mud than liquid. It seeped in so slowly that it took a long time to collect even a few gourdsful. Nya would crouch by the hole, waiting. Waiting for water. Here, for hours at a time. And every day for five long months, until the rains came and she and her family could return home,” (p. 27). I believe that this quote shows how much water is involved in Nya’s life and how much time she must spend getting water for her and her family because it says that she had to wait for hours a time everyday for five months until it rained.

In the book A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, the theme is nature can present many challenges to humans. Salva is a character in the story who suffers from living in the middle of a civil war and having to run away from his home and family while at school because of an attack and must keep walking with a group to a refugee camp with no one that he knows. Salva must walk hundreds of miles and through many different challenges that nature has provided. Some of these are the heat, the desert, rivers, and no water. Also the worst thing is that Sudan doesn’t have as good economy as New York. “Salva had never seen anything like the desert. [...] But here in the desert, nothing green could survive except tiny evergreen acacia bushes, which somehow endured the long winter months with almost no water. [...] Salva’s shoes stood no chance against the hot stony desert ground,” (p. 52). This quote shows that it was very difficult for Salva and the group to cross the desert and make it to the refugee camp alive. There was no water, no food, and it would take them three days to make it to the desert. This shows that nature can present many challenges to humans.

  14. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park Portraits many themes but i find that the theme that people don’t appreciate what they have until it’s gone is the most important. Nya lives in South Sudan, 2008-2009, making trips to fetch water every day. The water isn’t clean and not safe to drink. Nya’s little sister gets sick from the water, and Nya knows it can lead to death. Before Akeer got sick, Nya thought Akeer was annoying and didn’t like her, but after she got sick, she realized how much she actually loved her. Eventually Akeer was treated and later on a well was placed with clean water. “After just two doses of medicine, Akeer was nearly her old self again - still thin and weak but able to laugh as Nya sat on the floor next to her cot and played a clapping game with her,” (p.45). Nya is usually collecting water that isn’t clean or safe to drink, and Akeer stays home with her mother teaching her new things or how to collect water. Once Akeer got sick, Nya never realized how much she actually loved her until she was near death.

The same theme as Nya’s goes for Salva’s story too. When Salva’s teacher told her class to go into the bush, Salva eventually ran out and away from the bush and to another place. The whole time Salva was walking from his home to refugee camps, he was thinking of his family, if they were alive, where they are, or what they’d look like. Salva never realized how much he actually needs and loves his family until they were gone.”As Salva walked, the same thoughts kept going through his head in rhythm with his steps. Where are we going? Where is my family? When will I see them again?” This quote shows that once Salva left, he kept thinking about the future. Salva also never realized how much he actually loved and needed his family. The quote also showed that Salva was confused and was very lonely since he knew no one. Salva’s family and friends all gave him love and support, while the group he was walking with him gave him little to no support at at all. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park portraits many themes but i find that the theme that people don’t appreciate what they have until it’s gone, is the most important. This theme was made clear because Nya loved her family, and when her dad went out to hunt he could be killed by their opposing Dinka tribe, and Nya was always scared for him, Salva on the other hand, didn’t realize how lucky he was , or how much he loved and needed his family until he was gone and separated from them because of the Civil War going on in Sudan.

  15. A “Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, the main idea or theme is “nature can present many changes to humans”. Nya is eleven years of age and the other character is Salva who is eleven at the beginning of the book. Let’s start with Nya’s story first. She is a tough character. She must get water for her family and sometimes take her little sister. “To the pond and back-to the pond and back-nearly a full day of walking altogether”. She has to repeat that process for seven months. To get water for her family so they can survive. It is very hard for her because since she has no shoes she cuts her foot on the terrain very often. It is very hot so if she does not get the water soon she could risk her life and her family. Sometimes the walk is not worth it because the water could kill her since it has so many bacteria in it. Both Nya’s and Salva story is based on fighting and trying to beat natures obstacles.
Salva was in school when the civil war came to this town. The teacher told them to run away from his village and away from his family. He joined up with several groups of survivors and traveled along way to Ethiopia refugee camp. Then the fellow workers told them they all had to leave. Than he had to travel to the Ifo camp in Kenya. Then he is picked out of the fellow survivors to go to America the land for free. Then he got a degree in America. With that he created “Water for Sudan”. Throughout his life it has been very rough he had to pass a lot of obstacles in nature like. “A lion had been hungry enough to approach the group as they slept.” This quote shows that nature presents him and everyone else many challenges. In the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue park. All these obstacles were nature and was a strong threat to their survival.

In a “Long walk to water” by Linda Sue Park there are two characters that have the same theme.Nya is a girl living in southern Sudan in 2008 Nya must get water for her family every day for them to survive. Every couple of months her and her family move to a camp to get water and they must leave their home. “Home just long enough to eat, Nya would now have to make her second trip to the pond.” This quote shows that Nya spent almost all of her day getting water for her family. She was responsible for her family's survival. the other character Salva also must leave his home and struggle for water. One day Salva was at school the teacher told his students to run into the bush because of gun shoots. The next day Salva was put in to a group and they walked until they got to a barn they stayed there for the night that next morning Salvas group had left him and for three days salva stayed with an old lady on the third day the lady told him she must leave and group walking by took Salva with them. A couple days with his new group Salva realized his uncle was part of the group. His Uncle was the group leader and shared everything he got with Salva and the group. After passing the nile and half way through the desert a group of Nuer men took all their belongings and had killed Salvas uncle. uncle had kept Salva going and now he was gone. the thought every one of his loved ones kept him going. His group finally gets to the refugee camp. a couple years later everyone is kicked out due to the government failing. Salva makes it over a crocodile infested river and becomes the leader of a group. A year and a half later they make it to another refugee. after a while he decides to go to a third refugee to find something better and he does he is taught english and volleyball and is sent to AMERICA! “Where is my family? Where is my family?” Salva could not stop thinking about his family and how he had to leave them,he had missed them very much. ne of the main ideas throughout “A long walk to water” by Linda Sue Park was that we must sometimes leave our belongings and loved ones behind to survive.

  17. In the Novel A Long Walk To Water written by Linda Sue Park she convince the reader that nature can present many challenges to humans.

In the novel Nya is an eleven year old girl who lives in Southern Sudan. Nya has to walk a long distance to find water so her family could survive. The water that she relies on gets dried up and she ends up having to find another lake to get water. This is not easy because she doesn't know where to go and if her family doesn't get water, they will die. “The earth was dry rock-hard Nya felt puzzled and doubtful how could there be water in such a place and when she asked Dep that question, he shook his head she could see the doubt in his eye’s, too” (pg.64).Nya is trying to look for water but she can’t be able to find clean water..

Salva ,like Nya, is an eleven year old boy who and lives in Southern Sudan. He is living in a time of a war and is always in a hurry, because he fears for his life and wants to find clean water. “One day the group began walking in the later afternoon, with hopes of reaching a water hole before settling down for the night but there was no water anywhere, though they searched for miles.”(pg.37). The quote explains that the group is very tired and wishes to find water. If they don’t find water they will die.

A Long Walk to Water Theme/ Central Idea

A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park is a novel based on a true story and explores how individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. One of the main characters is Nya. Nya is an eleven-year-old girl who lives with the Nuer tribe in Southern Sudan. Nya is a fictionalized character, but is created out of stories of lost boys and real villagers. She spends a majority of her day walking back-and-forth from a pond to her home carrying a container of contaminated water and hopes to attend school some day. Nya walks the same path barefoot everyday that is filled with sharp little thorns with the hot sun baking down on her. Nya really does survive in an challenging environment in a remarkable way. “There was only heat, the sun already baking the air, even though it was long before noon. It would take her half the morning if she didn’t stop on the way. Heat. Time. And thorns,” (Linda Sue Park, 1). I believe that this quote is so effective toward reinforcing this message because it shows that she has to walk a long path filled with thorns in the heat. To Nya this was a challenge she had to complete twice, everyday.

In Linda Sue Park’s, A Long Walk to Water, there is another main character named Salva who also demonstrates that individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Salva starts out eleven-years-old at the beginning of the novel and reaches his twenties at the end. In the beginning of the novel, Salva attended school and lived with his family as part of the Dinka tribe. Throughout the story, Salva goes through an amazing but difficult and deadly journey to keep himself alive. War breaks out in his village while he is at school. The teacher told the students to run straight into the bushes and not to return home. From here on out, Salva spends his days walking to a new refugee camp or waiting for his next meal among thousands of displaced people. “A boy next to him grabbed him around the neck and clung to him tightly. Salva was forced under the surface without time to take more than a quick, shallow breath. Salva struggled-kicking, clawing. He’s holding on to me to hard… I can’t… air… no air left… Suddenly, the boy’s grip loosened, and Salva launched himself upward. He threw his head back and took a huge gulp of air. For a few moments he could do nothing but gasp and choke. When his vision cleared, he saw why the boy had let go: He was floating with his head down, blood streaming from a bullet hole in the back of his neck. Stunned, Salva realized that being forced under the water had probably saved his life. But there was no time to marvel over this. More crocodiles were launching themselves off the banks. The rain, the mad current, the bullets, the blood… He had to get across somehow. Salva did not know how long he was in the water. It felt like hours. It felt like years,” (Linda Sue Park, 78-79). I believe that quote is so effective toward reinforcing this message because Salva was able to survive a dreadful problem in an astonishing way. The young boy had taken the bullet which could have easily killed Salva. After that, Salva still had to swim a long way to land hoping he wouldn’t get eaten by a crocodile, shot by another soldier or even drowned by another young boy he didn’t know. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, was a very suspenseful and tragic novel. Throughout the story, Linda Sue Park showed how individuals can survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways by having two characters go through long journeys to reach their goals and stay alive.

Another character Salva was also able to survive in a tough environment. Salva was a 11 year old boy forced to flee his home town due to war. He then set out on foot first walking with a group of people to wherever then the group left him where he stayed in barn. Then another group comes a picks him up as the group increases one morning he found his uncle his uncle took care of him as they walked through the desert. Then his water was low he almost gave up when his uncle pushed him. But then a group of men robbed the group and killed uncle. With uncle gone salva was determined to make it to the refugee camp he did. But six years later salva was now 17 the refugees were forced to flee do to ethiopians shooting chasing them to the gilo river which was filled with crocodiles salva barely made it. Salva now led 1,000 boys to Kenya to kamakura they encountered many peril. They finally make it to Kenya where salva goes on another journey to America. I felt more like i needed to get to the camp means he felt tragedy but overcame it. In conclusion both these characters survived in challenging environments in remarkable ways.
