  2. One theme of A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, is that nature can present many challenges to humans. Nya got this message across because, like Salva, faced many obstacles from nature. Every day, Nya had to walk for 8 hours to a pond to retrieve water for her family. This water was dirty, so many people were getting sick. Soon after, strangers show up and start drilling the ground to make a well. They completed the well and everyone got cool, clean water. Afterwards, Nya meets the boss of the operation and finds out that he is Salva. “There was only heat, the sun already baking the air, even though it was long before noon. It would take her half the morning if she didn’t stop on the way. Heat. Time. And thorns.” I think this quote conveyed the central idea because it shows the difficult conditions that Nya had to go through. These obstacles come from nature and affected both Nya and Salva and made a big difference in the story.

Salva was in a school when the civil war arrived at his town. He was told to run away from the town and away from their families. He joins up with several groups of survivors and travel to Ethiopia, where they stay at a refugee camp for several years. The government is then overthrown and they were forced to go away and into a crocodile infested river. He finds another refugee camp and stays there until he is sent to America. There, he finds out most of his family is alive and returns. When he went back to America, he raised money to make wells for villages In Sudan. He got this message across because he had many obstacles from nature such as the heat, large rivers he had to cross, wildlife, and more. “A lion had been hungry enough to approach the group as they slept.” This quote shows that nature was presenting all of his friends and group members many challenges. A lion killing one of his friends was the example I chose conveyed the message well. In the book, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, one central idea was that nature can present many challenges to humans. This was made clear for Nya and Salva because they both faced many obstacles and challenges they had to overcome to survive. Almost all of these challenges were from nature and threatened their survival.

  3. In the novel " A Long Walk to Water " by Linda Sue Park, the theme or central idea was that nature can present many challenges to humans. Nya is a young girl living in Southern Sudan, 2009. Nya's story was a very sad story. Everyday Nya would walk for 2 hours to get water from a pond. Nya would stop for lunch and go back again to the pond. Nya couldn't go to school. One day her sister , Akeer, got sick, so they took her to the hospital. The doctor says she got sick because of the water Nya got. Luckily, a man organised a program to help raise money for the village water. Her brother tells her they are building a well with fresh water. Then she finds out they are building a school that she can go to."She looked at the bottom of her foot. There it was , a big thorn that had been broken off right in the middle of her hell. Nya pushed at the skin around the thorn. The she picked up another thorn and used it to poke and prod at the first one. She pressed her lips together against the pain"I believe this quote is so effective toward this message because Nya faced through the challenge of this thorn. She knew she had to take it ff to walk and was strong and brave taking it off. Nya faced through many challenges, but so did Salva.

Salva's life was turned upside down when soldiers invaded his home ton, Loun Ariik. His teacher tells him to run away from the school and straight to the bush. Along with another 15 people, they began to walk. Along the way people died, got lost, or wondered off. Salva became the new leader. 6 years later, the Ethiopian government came along and closed down the camp. Salva and the others were forced to leave harshly. Salva began another walk for a year and a half. Then he reached the refugee camp in Kenya. Salva spent the next 5 years in the camp. A lucky 3,00 out of 100,000 were selected to travel to America. Salva flew to America with his adopted family. 6 years later Salva's cousin tells him id father is still alive at a hospital. Then he went to see his father he saw all the sick people and thought to create a campaign. He called it "Water for Sudan" to help raise money for well to be built. "Salva had no choice. He jumped into the water and began to swim." I believe this quote is so effective toward this message because it tells you how brave Salva was in jumping into the river even though he knew there were crocodiles. In the novel "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park, the message was clear. Salva and Nya both faced difficult challenges.

  7. Linda Sue Park wrote the book, “A Long Walk to Water,” to explain about the lives of 2 Sudanese children One theme that can be conveyed for both of them is that, “Water is our Most Important Resource. Nya is a young girl in South Sudan during 2008. She has 2 brothers and 1 sister. Her job is the fetch water for the family. That is all she does every day. She walks all the way to the pond (far distance), gets water in a large bottle/tub, and brings it back. It is a long hot, walk over a path littered with thorns. Even if it is annoying, she does it because her family cannot survive without it. “To the pond and back, to the pond and back-nearly a full day of walking altogether. This was Nya’s daily routine, seven months of the year.” She is probably really tired and annoyed at this job. She still keeps going. Water is really important in her life, and it is really important in Salva’s life (the other character) too.

Salva is an 11 year old boy in the beginning of this book and he lives in Southern Sudan, 1985. He was separated from his family when soldiers from the north attacked their village. He had to travel for months to try to get to a refugee camp in Kenya which he thought would give him refuge. In this journey, he was faced with the task of crossing a desert. In it, the group he was in came across a group of men recently fainted in the sand. Some people were giving them water. Salva wanted to give water to them too, but his uncle, who was travelling with him, told him no. “No Salva. You are too small and not strong enough yet.” Water is really important to Salva’s life. He is in need of it. When he was thinking of giving it to others, his uncle said that he needed that water. The only way Salva was to get out of the desert alive was with water. Linda Sue Park wrote an excellent book named, “A Long Walk to Water,” and reiterated a very important message to us, the readers. That message was that Water is a very important resource. She showed examples throughout the book about two characters and how their lives depended on water. That is a very important message.

    1. A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park presents the theme of nature presenting many challenges to humans in many ways. Nya lives in a small, poor village in South Sudan. For the sake of her and her family’s survival Nya is forced to walk hours just to get to a pond for water, she is to do this twice a day. This is a very common example of how nature can present challenges to humans although it is the year 2008. Since the water is taken from a pond, it is contaminated and many can get diseases or worse, die from it. “To the pond and back- to the pond and back- nearly a full day of walking altogether. This was Nya’s daily routine seven months of a year. Daily. Every single day.” This quote proves to be effective because it shows how Nya’s life is impacted by the location of their village and the geographical features surrounding it. The pond is a powerful example of how nature presents challenges to humans since it controls Nya’s and her village’s survival. Salva and Nya are often juxtaposed and in comparison, both characters face the trouble of lacking the basic needs of a human.
Salva used to live in a small village where everything was great until the raging war struck hometown. As he flees to find a safe haven he is forced to survive harsh conditions and weather as him and his group journeys through Sudan and Ethiopia. After suffering an attack of mosquitoes, the group enters a realm of unbearable heat and arid air, the Akobo desert. “The sun is relentless and eternal: There was neither a whisp of cloud nor whiff of breeze for relief.” In this quote nature presents the challenge of arid heat and eternal sun. It is perfect example of how nature presents challenges because the group is tired and hot. It has no protection from the sun, suffering pains from such harsh environment. In “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, nature presents many challenges to Salva and Nya in many ways. Salva is forced to face the heat, Nya is forced to walk all day for water.

  9. “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park

“A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park tells two stories, one about an eleven year old girl named Nya who lives in Southern Sudan and everyday must fetch water a half a mornings walk. It shows that nature can present many challenges to humans, as Nya must now devote her life to getting water for her and her family. “To the pond and back—to the pond and back—nearly a full day of walking altogether. This was Nya’s daily routine seven months of the year. Daily. Every single day”. I think this quote shows just how much this must mean to Nya if she must go twice a day, seven months a year and also what does she do for the other five months of the year? There are many challenges she must face. Sometimes more than one person faces a certain obstacle, Salva Dut must also face these challenges.

The other story tells of a boy named Salva Dut who is also eleven and must travel away from his village Loun Ariik to find safety somewhere else. Salva leaves his home and has to face the new challenges that surround him in the wilderness in Sudan. He must travel through the Akobo Desert, cross the Gilo River, survive in a refugee camp, and swim across the river Nile. “Uncle cautioned him to make the water in his gourd last as long as possible. It was the hardest thing Salva had ever done, taking only tiny sips when his body cried out for huge gulps of thirst-quenching, life giving water”. I think this quote shows that Salva too had to face the challenges Nya had to face as Salva had to ration his water so he wouldn’t die. He also claimed that it was the hardest thing he had ever done. Salva and Nya both must face the challenges that happen in the wilderness. The book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park does show how nature can present challenges to humans and gave us an understanding of what that is like. It made it clear in many parts of the book such as Nya and her water problems and Salva trying to survive out in the wild.

  10. In the novel “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, Salva and Nya demonstrate that is was difficult to live with scarce resources and in an extremely harsh climate. Nya must walk on a journey everyday to get water for her and her family. The water from this pond is filled with dirt and causes many deaths and disease throughout the village. A group from America comes to place a well in the village so that the villagers do not have to walk miles to obtain water. Nya is so grateful but yet doubtful they will ever find water underground. “The earth was dry and rock-hard. Nya felt puzzled and doubtful: How could there be water in such a place?” Once the water is drilled out of the well it takes several days to run clear but it eventually did. Water is sparse and families have had to settle wherever they found water and would have to move again when it dried up. Nya met a construction worker named Salva who was helping drill for water. Salva had escaped the war torn country and had made it to America. He came back to help the villagers in his country because he felt like he wanted to give back to his country. Nya and Salva had to move constantly to find water and to fight against the harsh climate.

As Salva daydreams out the window during class the civil war rolls through his village which was named Loun Ariik. His teacher tells the class to run so Salva does. He leaves everything behind and assumed his family would be all dead. He was forced to join large crowds of people that are aimlessly walking to escape the war. During this walk he finds his uncle. His uncle helped to motivate him and does not let him give up but sadly he was killed by members of the opposing tribe. Salva is forced to continue on. He is chased out of Ethiopia. He then leads a younger group of boys into Kenya in a refugee camp. Salva meets a counselor at the camp and learns English. It is while he was at the camp that he learned that he may have an opportunity to be sent to America with the a small fraction of the lost boys who have been displaced by the violence of the war. “Salva made up his mind. He would walk south, to Kenya. He did not know what he would find once he got there, but it seemed to be his best choice.” Salva had led at least 1500 boys to the safety of the refugee camp. Salva did not know where he was going but did know he had to keep going. The climate, limited natural resources and war threatened the survival of everybody at all times. Both of these individuals overcame these obstacles in their lives.

  11. No matter where you live, you will always have the necessity for water. Nya must walk everyday for miles to retrieve water for her family. She wakes up to get water with a bucket or a vase and when she returns she gets fed. She has to walk a long way everyday there is no water around. Water is very scarce in South Sudan. If Nya didn’t need water, she wouldn’t walk every day to get it. “To the pond and back-to the pond and back-nearly a full day of walking altogether. This was Nya’s daily routine seven months of the year” (p.20).This quote shows that water is a major priority in Nya’s life. She has to take long, hot walks to the pond miles away every day. Her family put her in charge of water so this proves she is very responsible.Water was Nya’s and Salva’s major priority.

Salva’s is an eleven year-old boy who had to run away from his family due to the war in South Sudan. He had go through many difficult geographies and had a lot of challenges. He had to survive mostly on his own since people doubted him, except for his uncle. His uncle helped him become a survivor. “It was the hardest thing Salva had ever done, taking only tiny sips when his body cried out for huge gulps of thirst-quenching, life-giving water” (53). This quote shows that water is very important to Salva’s survival. He had to take small sips of water when he was walking through a desert so that he didn’t drink all of it. Water is very important because Salva would probably die if he didn’t have any water. Salva had to be very resourceful throughout his journey. The theme of A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park is that water is the most important resource in survival. Water is the most important thing in both Nya and Salva’s life.

  12. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park has a meaningful theme of water is our most important resource.
Nya Is a young girl in Southern Sudan 2008-2009. She belongs to the nuer tribe. She has to walk all day, every day to a pond to get water for her family. If she didn’t go to the pond they would have no water at all. Her family includes 6 people (including her) so she has to go twice to get enough for them to survive. “With the water balanced on her head, and her foot still sore from the thorn, Nya knew that going home would take longer than coming had. But she read home by noon, if all went well.”The quote means that she needs to get the water for her family no matter what. It will take a long time to get home but she needs to. If she doesn’t, her family will not survive, so it’s up to her to get the water her family needs to survive.
As Nya has a struggle with water, another character, Salva has a struggle as well.
Salva has to walk through his torn village. When he needs to leave his school when his village is attacked, he ends up walking through a desert. He has very limited resources including a gourd of water. As they come across a group of dehydrated people they need to decide whether to save them or not. Some women step up to help, but Salva’s uncle warns him to save his own. “You are too small and no strong enough yet. Without water you will not survive the rest of the walk.” I think that this message shows we need water a lot. Without water he will not survive so his uncle is wise to tell him that he should save his own water. We need water in our body to keep It running smoothly.
A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park stated the central idea water is our most important resource through Nya and Salva.

  14. In A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park, Nya and Salvas theme is water is the most important resource.Water is the most important resource to our lives, for example Nya had had to drink dirty water and from that they could get really sick just like her sister and form what the doctor said they could possibly not have any more water.”the sickness came from the water the nurse explained. she should drink only drink clean water. If the water is dirty, you should boil it dorr a count of a hundred before she drinks it. Nyas mother nodded that she understood, but nya could see the worry in her eyes.”(pg.45) The problem is that if they boil the dirty water the water could evaporate and their water could disappear and Nays family could possibly not have any more water!. For Salva the water situation is a little different he has no water. Salva is walking the desert which is extremely hot!. salva has to try to survive with a little bit of water from a gourd he got but the water is running out he could die from dehydration. “taking only tiny sips when his body cried out for huge gulps of thirst quenching, life-giving water”(pg.53)this quote expresses how salva wanted to probably drink the rest of the water that was in his gourd but he drank little sips that way he had more for later. The theme in A Long Walk To Water by LindaSue Park is water is our most important resource because nobody can love without water you body just can't take it and Linda made that point really clear by using to characters salva and Nya demonstrating how they both needed water at a point in the story.

  15. “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Parks has a lot of central ideas. The theme that i think best fits this novel for both Nya and Salva is that water is our most important resource. Nya’s story got this message across a lot in this novel. Everyday for seven months a year, Nya had to go to the pond to get water for her and her family. You can tell that water is very important to Nya because she walks barefoot and sometimes gets thorns in her feet all day to get water. “Nya put the container down and sat on the ground. She always tried not to step on the spiky plants that grew along the path, [...].” This quote is so effective toward reinforcing this message because this was Nya’s daily routine. Nya is probably really tired of this job. She still keeps going. Water is really really important to her.
Salva is an eleven year old boy in Southern Sudan in 1985; he was in school when civil war civil war came to his village. He was told to run to the bush, not home. Salva had to face lots of new challenges while he was in the wilderness and in the desert. “ Uncle cautioned him to make the water in the gourd last as long a possible. It was the hardest thing Salva had ever done, taking only tiny sips when his body cried out for huge gulps of thirst quenching, life giving water. I think this quote shows that both Nya and Salva had to face the challenges of lack of water. Water is very important to both Salva and Nya and if they didn’t have the little amount of water that they have now, they would probably die. In the novel “ A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Parks, the message is clear. Water is our most importart resource.

  16. The book my class read was A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. The central idea is nature can present many challenges to humans. Everyday Nya had to walk 8 hours to get water and she would have to make 2 trips. The water she was getting was really dirty. So her sister got sick from the dirty water. This shows the theme because the nature presents challenges to Nya and her family by making the water dirty so it's bad to drink. "The water wasn’t clear. It was brown and heavy-looking. It was full of mud." (p.84) This shows that they can not drink the water because it is dirty. Which relates back to nature can present many challenges to humans. This transacts to Salva because he has problems with nature to.

Salva's village was attached and he had to run away. He got to the refugee camp in Ethiopia then they kicked him out. So he went to Kenya. After he got there he got to go live in New York. On his journey to the refugee amps there were lions and Salva started to run out of water. "…every stillness a lion waiting to spring" (p.40) This quote shows that there are hungry lions out there waiting to eat people. This connects to the theme by that nature can present many challenges and it is a challenge to get to a refugee camp if your dead. Nature can present many challenges to humans is the theme to A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. The theme is clear because Nya and Salva both could have dies or got sick.

  18. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park has the theme Nature can present many challenges to humans. In Nya’s part of the story, her village doesn’t have clean water. Nya has to walk all day, every day to get water for her family. On her walk it’s hot and there are many thorns. These conditions make it harder for Nya to get the water. “It would take her half the morning if she didn’t stop along the way. Heat. Time. And thorns,” (p. 1). This quote tells about Nya going to get water. It shows how much effort goes into getting water. Nature is presenting the challenges of heat and thorns. Nya has overcome these challenges and kept going to get water for her family. The theme is conveyed in Salva’s story as well as Nya’s. In Salva’s story there is a war going on between North Sudan and South Sudan. To escape the fighting Salva has to flee. He walks a long way filled with many hardships to get to safety. “Each minute walking in that arid heat felt like an hour. Even breathing became an effort: Every breath Salva took seemed to drain strength rather than restore it,” (p.52).This quote is from when Salva was walking through the desert. The desert provides many challenges for Salva, especially the heat. At one point Salva is so thirsty and tired he starts to lag behind and almost gives upThe theme nature can present many challenges to humans is a big part of A long walk to water, in both Salva and Nya’s stories.

  19. The novel, A long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, is about two remarkable stories of 2 kids named Salva and Nya, with a central idea which that is nature can present many challenges to humans. Nya is a girl from Southern Sudan who needs to get water for her family from the pond several times a day.The water from the pond is also dirty and not fresh. One time, her sister Alkeer had to go to the doctor and get medicine from being sick because of the dirty water. After many years of going back and forth to the pond, Nya’s village gets a pump for water that is clean and also gets resources toward her village like a school. During the long walks to the pond, Nya gets thorns in her feet and often has to drink and wait for water from wet mud which becomes contaminated with dirt presenting Nya with challenges. “Home for just long enough to eat, Nya would now make her second trip to the pond. To the pond and back-- to the pond and back--nearly a full day of walking altogether. This was Nya’s daily routine for seven months of the year.” This quote is effective toward nature can present many challenges to humans because it shows how difficult it is to get water. Nya has to go through the challenge of walking for many hot hours a day to get enough water for her family for only one day, everyday. The obstacles from nature that Nya and Salva encountered affected the novel in many different ways. Salva was a boy from Southern Sudan whose village Loun-Ariik got invaded by the civil war. Salva had to run away from his village leaving his family. He started walking for Ethiopia with a group who left him in a barn. Eventually, Salva started walking with another group. That group had very little water and food which was also hard to find in the desert. After a some days of walking, Salva finds his Uncle who helped him very much throughout the days of walking and becoming the leader, until he was killed by rebels. After that, Salva went in and out of refugee camps and even becoming a leader in a group going to Kenya. One day while in a refugee camp, they say that they are picking people to go to America. After a few days of waiting, Salva’s name was on the list and he went to Rochester NY to met his new family. While in Rochester, Salva finds out that his family is still alive but his father is sick from dirty water. Since that happened, Salve made an Organization called Water for Sudan, putting pumps in Sudan for water. Salva goes through a lot of obstacles from nature like being attacked by mosquitos in the blaring heat and crossing the Gilo river with crocodiles to get back to Sudan from Ethiopia. “The rain, the mad current. the bullets, the crocodiles, the welter of arms and legs, the screams, the blood...he had to get across somehow.” This quote is effective because it shows the challenge of crossing the river with bullets, bodies dead and alive and bad currents. Salva had to make a choice of dying either by trying to get over the river or by getting shot. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park has a central idea that is nature can present many challenges to humans and the author makes this clear by the challenges Nya and Salva went through.

In this novel a Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park there are a lot of challenges that these young kids face. One of the children name is Nya. She lived in Southern Sudan in 2009. Nya had a very hard job, every day she had to walk about 2 hours to get water from a dirty pond. Nya would always have to go back and forth just to get water. There was no education where she lived. People would usually get sick because the water was to dirty from the pond. For example Nya sister Akeer got sick and they had to take her to the doctor. The doctor said the water that Akeer was drinking was to dirty for her to drink. In a few months’ time a man organized a program. His program was to raise money for the village to clean the water. They were building a well and a school that she would be able to get into because Girls weren’t allowed to go to school. Nya was waiting for water for hours at a time, every day for 5 months until the rains came then she and her family could return home." This quote lets you know that she had a wait a long time just to collect water. Nya faced many obstacles and so did Salva.
Salva was a young boy who went to school and got evaded by soldiers. His teacher told him and the rest of the children to run away and not go home. He ran to a house thinking that his family was dead. He met a lady who was very nice to him and she let him stay but she had to leave because she didn’t want people to find her and Salva. Salva left to with a group of people and ran into his uncle along the way. His uncle lead the group because he was the most experienced. Their plan was to head to Ethiopia because there was a refugee camp. On the way his uncle was killed. Salve thought that he was the only one left in his family. As Slava got older he became the leader and went to the Kenya camp. Salva spent 3 years at that camp and then went to America where he was adopted by a family. Salva went to college and found out that his family is still alive. He found his family and his dad inspired him to create a campaign and raise money to build a school and wells in Southern Sudan. "One problem at a time.” Was figured out from this problem. Day by day, by solving one problem at a time, Salva moved towards his goal." This tells me that Salva solves water problems for Dinka and Nuer tribes in Sudan. He never gave up and always remembered his Uncle's encouraging words all the time. In the novel "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park, the message was clear that Salva and Nya both faced difficult challenges.

  23. A Long Walk to Water: Concepts of Survival
    By Taylor Powley Mod 4
There are many challenges in life that you must overcome. In the novel “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, a young boy named Salva had to overcome many obstacles. There were a number of factors that made it possible for Salva throughout the novel.

Walking through the Akobo Desert, with no shoes and being dehydrated was one crucial factor. “Ahead lay the most difficult part of their journey: The Akobo Desert.” “Thorns gored his feet. His lips became cracked and parched.” But, there are factors that helped Salva overcome these challenges. One is when Uncle, Salva’s Uncle, divided the journey through the desert into little distances for Salva. “Do you see that group of bushes?” Uncle said, pointing. “You need only to walk as far as those bushes. Can you do that, Salva Mawien Dut Ariik?” This helped Salva because it made the journey seem somewhat shorter.

Crossing the Gilo River was another crucial challenge that Salva had to face. He was almost forcefully drowned, shot by soldiers, and killed by crocodiles. “The soldiers were forcing some of them into the water, prodding them with their rifle butts, shooting into the air.” “[...] Salva saw the telltale flick of a crocodile’s tail as it flopped into the water near the young man. [...] a moment later, the man was pulled under. A cloud of red stained the water.” But, almost being forcefully drowned saved Salva’s life. If he hadn’t been forced under, he would’ve got shot. “A boy next to him grabbed him around the neck and clung to him tightly. Salva was forced under the surface [...].” Stunned, Salva realized that being forced under had probably saved his life.”

There were a number of factors that made it possible for Salva throughout the novel. He went through many challenges, crossing the Akobo Desert, and the Gilo River. Salva had many obstacles throughout his life, but overcame many of them.
