  1. In ‘A Long Walk to Water’ by Linda Sue Park, I have identified the theme “nature can present many challenges to humans.” Nya is a young girl living in Southern Sudan that has to walk to a pond every day to provide clean water for family. Nya’s story gets this message across by showing how far Nya has to walk for water. Nya has to go through a few different obstacles on her way to the pond each day. “Nya put the container down and sat on the ground. She always tried not to step on the spiky plants that grew along the path, but their thorns littered the ground everywhere,” (8). This quote describes how Nya has to go through one of nature’s challenges; thorn bushes. Nya had to get through a field of thorns to get the water her family needed. She needed to get the water, so she got through the pain of multiple thorns in her bare feet.
Nya’s trips to the pond contained a few of nature’s challenges, but Salva’s story contains even more of nature’s challenges. Salva is a young boy living in Southern Sudan during a war who had run away from his home to escape gunfire. Salva’s story gets this message across by telling the challenges of nature that Salva faced on his journey to the Itang refugee camp. “Salva had not seen anything like the desert. […] here in the desert, nothing green could survive except tiny evergreen acacia bushes , which somehow endured the long winter months with almost no water,” (52). This quote talks about the desert that Salva had to walk through and the challenges it presented to him. Salva had to overcome this obstacle in order to survive, so he did what he had to do. Salva encountered many other challenges of nature, but overcame them as he did the desert. The theme “nature can present many challenges to humans” is used in ‘A Long Walk Water’ by Linda Sue Park to show what skills are needed to survive in nature.

  2. In “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, the central idea is water is our most important resource. The book has two main characters. One is named Nya who lives in Southern Sudan in 2009, and the other is named Salva who lives there in 1985. Nya is a young girl living in South Sudan in 2009. Nya has to travel a long and difficult journey to a pond to fetch water for her family every day. The pond water turns out to be dirty and makes people sick including Nya’s little sister Akeer. One day these men come to Nya’s village and start drilling a hole for a new well. It was part of a fundraiser called Water for Sudan which is funded by American schools. “Nya thought it was funny: You had to have water to find water.”(page 76) This quote supports the idea that the theme of this novel is that water is our most crucial resource. In this novel the other main character named Salva also needs water. Salva is a young boy who also lives in South Sudan in 1985. There was a civil war going on in Sudan at the time so life in Sudan could get dangerous sometimes. One day his teacher at his school tells him and his classmates to run away because of soldiers near the school with guns. Salva hides in a barn and can’t find his family. He is scared that he will never see them again. After a while a tribe called the Dinka arrives and takes hm with them. He finds his uncle with them and is happy that he still has some family left. But then a group of soldiers from a rival tribe called the Nuer attack their tribe and shoot his uncle. Salva is all alone. He lives in a refugee camp for the next six years in Kenya until 1991 when soldiers attack that camp too. He has to jump in a river and lead a group of kids called “Lost Boys” through the desert for 1 year. He struggles to get water and food. He then finds another refugee camp and then gets selected to go to America along with some other boys. His new home is Rochester, New York. He feels bad for the poor people living in Sudan and starts a charity called Water for Sudan. Salva turns out to be one of the men who came to Nya’s village and actually met Nya. “ “I am happy meet you, Nya,” he said. “My name is Salva.” “ (page 115) Salva realizes that what Sudan needs the most is water. That also supports the theme. The theme of Linda Sue Park’s “A Long Walk to Water” is that water is our most important resource. There is a lot of evidence in the text that supports it.

  3. “ A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park is about how during a time of war water is needed even though there is little to sustain life. Nya is one out of the two protagonists in the story. Nya’s main struggle is that she has to walk frequently to a pond to fetch water for her family at a refugee camp. Nya’s younger sister Akeer gets terribly sick from the warm muddy pond water, and is taken to a clinic to seek help. “ Nya’s father decided that Akeer needed a doctor. So Nya and her mother had taken Akeer to a special place - a big white tent full of people who are sick or hurt.” ( pg.45 )
Another protagonist in the story was Salva. Salva had the same stuggle as
Nya to find water but his story is more complex.
Salva is eleven when he has to run away from his village because there was a shooting at his school. In one of his groups he finds his uncle. Him and his uncle walk through a desert just to find water. “The first day in the desert felt like the longest day Salva had ever lived through. The sun was relentless and eternal.” ( pg.52 ) Salva and his uncle started their first day in the desert walking. After their journey walking through the desert Salva reached for his gored which only collected a small amount of water for him to drink. Both Nya and Salva had to fight for water in their life because during a time of war water is needed to sustain life even though the recourse your searching for is very limited.

  4. In the book, “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, the theme is “Individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways.” Nya is a girl living in Southern Sudan. She has to walk eight hours a day to fetch contaminated water for her family. But when her sister gets sick because of the water, it is a big problem because boiling water is not an option. Later in the village, they build a well. Nya’s story gets across the theme because of where she lives, she used to have to walk every day to the pond just to get water for her family. “There was little weight, going. There was only heat, the sin already baking the air, even though long before noon. It would take her half the morning if she didn’t stop on the way. Heat. Time. And Thorns.” This quote enforces the theme because Nya had to survive walking eight hours a day to get water from the pond. The environment was not good and there were thorns on the ground. Nya is able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Salva’s story also comes across this theme such as Nya. Salva was a boy living in Southern Sudan. One day, war hit his school and everyone had to flee. Throughout his life so far, Salva was mostly in groups, looking for refugee camps walking through deserts and forests trying to survive. Later, he gets transported to America and starts a new life with a new family. Salva’s story gets across this message because he had survived through many environments in order to survive. “The first day in the desert felt like the longest day Salva had ever lived through. The sun was relentless and eternal: There was neither a wisp of cloud nor whiff of breeze for relief. Each minute of walking in that arid heat felt like an hour. Even breathing became an effort. Every breath Salva took seemed to drain strength rather than restore it.” This quote enforces the theme because Salva and the group had to survive a three day’s walk through the desert. Thankfully, he survived while others didn’t. He survived a tough environment which is the Akobo desert. It is remarkable for a young person to be doing this. In the book, “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, the theme was “Individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways.” This was made clear by the challenges of these characters.

  5. "Along Walk To Water" by Linda Sure Parks explored many themes. I believe that the theme in this book is "You cannot escape our fates." Nya was born in Southern Sudan in 2008, everyday she would walk to go fetch water for her family it would take her 3 days to get to the lake, Nya's story got this message across because her fate was being born in southern Sudan during a war. A quote from Nya that shows this message is "She could even drag it behind her, bumping it against the ground and raising a tiny cloud of dust with each step (The bucket)." I believe this quote is so effective to the theme because it shows that it was her fate to be born in southern Sudan and have limited water so she would have to walk three days to get water. Salva also showed this theme in his own way. Salva was born in Southern Sudan in 1985. when saliva was in school he was told to run and don't go back to his family\village because there was gun shots going off but then he wasn't able to find his family , but through all the trouble he found his uncle, Salvas story shows this theme because the fate was he was attacked at school and needed to run. a quote to show this is "go quickly all of you, the teacher said his voice low and urgent into the bush do you hear me not home don't run home" (pg6). this quote is so effective to the theme because Salva couldn't control when the gunshots when off and he had to run away and don't look back it was his fate. "A Long Walk To Water" by Linda Sue Parks showed the theme " you cannot escape our fates" with Nya and Salva in a way.

  6. In a long walk to water by Linda sue park, the characters prove that individuals are able to survive in challenging environments is remarkable ways.ways. Nya, the first character, conveys this message perfectly. for her daily routine, she has to walk eight hours a day to get water for her family, seven months of the year. and than, when her sister was sick, she walked with her to the hospital with her, three days away. "Stopping just long enough to eat, Nya would make her second trip to the pond. to the pond and back, to the pond and back, nearly a full day of walking altogether.this was Nya's daily routine, seven months of the year. Daily. Every single day." She walks for the whole day, every day. Than she only gets a little resting period before she has to walk again. She is able to survive, even though most of her life is spent walking. However Salva, the other character's life was as challenging, maybe more. Salva is dinka and living in a village when the Sudan civil war stumbles upon his town. He is forced to run away, facing lions, mosquito, and a desert to get to a refugee camp where they force him away. He has to go to another camp, far away. He goes for a long time to get back to his dream of finding his family again, and being freed from danger, surviving astonishingly along the way, even is challenging environments. "He heard them laughing. as salva watched, one of the men aimed his gun at uncle. three shots rang out. than the men ran away." Even facing a bunch of challenges, Salva keeps going. even after his friend's and uncle's death, even after getting thrown into a river, he still survived. Individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Nya and salva proved this fact is a long walk to water by Linda Sue Park by surviving remarkably in the environment that they were thrown into.

  7. In the story “A long Walk to Water” by :Linda Sue Park, she has shown the theme of how “individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Nya is a symbol for all the people in Southern Sudan who are struggling to find water for their families. Nya has to walk everyday back and forth to the pond to hopefully receive enough water for a couple days. “Nya’s job at the lake camp was the same at home: to fetch water with her hands, she would dig a hole in the damp clay of the lakebed. She kept digging, scooping out handfuls of clay until the hole was as deep as her arm was long. the clay got wetter as she dug, until, at last, water began to seep into the bottom of the hole. pg.26 This quote explains that it takes a long time and a lot of hard, frustrating work just to get a little water for herself and her family. Salva was a young boy who’s school experienced a shooting. Salva and his class have to run for their lives far away from their school, and would not return to their homes. He is now placed with a group of strangers, trying to survive through the long days of walking and possibly not even eating. “The days became a never-ending walk. Salva’s feet kept time with the thoughts in his head, the same words over and over: Where is my family? Where is my family? Every day he woke and walked with the group, rested at midday, and walked again until dark.” I think this quote shows how hard it was to walk almost all day and get only little rest just to survive. Salva had to be brave and responsible for himself. “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park Showed the theme of how “Individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways” with Salva because at first he was just a young boy clinging to his group for safety, but then grew up, later led his own group, and survived. Nya and Salva share the sma e theme because they both miracuously survived from all the difficult obstacles thrown at them and have become great people.

The theme of “A Long Walk to water” by Linda Sue Parks is, love is what makes life worth living. Nya is a 11 year old girl, who lives after the war. She is lucky enough to have her mom, sister, dad, and brother with her. But anyways water in Sudan is extremely scarce and if you do find water there is a 98% chance its contaminated with parasites and mud. Nya has to go to this pond everyday for the contaminated water, but one day she had to bring her younger sister with her and Nya noticed something was wrong . Her little sister was very sick from drinking the dirty water. In the novel it states, “Her silence frightened Nya. Only two days earlier, Akeer had complained noisily and at length about the pains...Now she felt guilty, for she could see that her sister no longer had enough strength to complain.” “ Akeer was nearly her old self again--still thin and weak but able to laugh as Nya sat on the floor next to her cot and played a clapping game with her” These quotes show the theme of love is what makes life worth living because each quote shows how Nya cared for her younger sister, willing to make the dangerous journey for her sister. The other main character, Salva, also shows the same theme as Nya. Salva was actually living during the war. He was in school, learning, when his teacher directed him to run. Through his whole journey, all Salva thought about was his family. He wondered if his family was alive or at refugee camps where he was going. Even when he came to America, he still wondered about his family. In the book it states, “As Salva walked the same thoughts kept going through his head in rhythm with his steps. Where are we going? Where is my family? “When will I see them again?” It also states “ If I die now, I will never see my family again. Somehow this thought strengthened him enough to keep him from collapsing in terror.” This quote conveys the theme because it shows how Salva loved his family so much, he thought about his family along his way and his love for his family was able to help him survive, by making him determined to make it out alive. So the overall theme of “ A long walk to water” by Linda Sue Parks is love is what makes life worth living.

  10. A long walk to water
The book, A long walk to water by Linda Sue Park has many themes that has to do withthe book. BUt one of the themes is that natre can present many challeneges to humans. Nya is a girl from sudan, who has to walk to a pond every day to get water for her famil. Nya’s story got the message across because everday she has a long walk to a pond in order to provide water to her family, also in order for them to survive. For example in the “A Long Walk To Water” it says “The doughnut went on her head first, followed by the heavy container of water, which she would hold in place with one hand, and her foot still sore from the thorn, Nya knew that going home would take longer that coming had. But she might reach home by noon if all went well.” I believe that quote is so effective toward reinforcing this message because it represent what she has to do every morning, that would be a challenge beacuse it woyuld be a long walk also she would have to go barefooted too.
Salva was a boy from sudan, where he went to school and one day the teacher had told the boys to run away from home beacuse it was dangerous if he went back. So now he goes through obstacled in order for him to suvive. In the book, “ A long Walk to Water” “ Slava made up his mind. He would walk south, to kenya. He did not know what he would find once he got there, but it seemed to be his best choice.” I believe that this quote is so effective toward reinforcing this message because now since he has no place to go. So now he’s going to have to from Ethiopia to Kakuma,Kenya. Salva and Nya had to survive in different ways. In the book, “A Long Walk To Water” both of the charaters had to go through a lot of obstacles in order to survive.

  11. A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park central idea is that nature can present many challenges to humans. Nya is girl from Sothern Sudan who has to walk to a pond everyday to get water for her family. Along the way she has to face many obstacles. “Nya put the container down and sat on the ground. She always tried not to step on the spiky plants that grew along the path, but their thorns littered the ground everywhere,” (8). This quote show that Nya had trouble along the way facing many obstacles.

Salva is a boy who lives in Southern Sudan. He has to walk through desert and cross rivers in order to get to refugee camps.“Salva had not seen anything like the desert. […] here in the desert, nothing green could survive except tiny evergreen acacia bushes , which somehow endured the long winter months with almost no water,” (52). This quote shows that Salva had to go through the desert with barley any water. Both Nya and Salva have to go through a lot of obstacles in order to survive.

  12. The book “A Long Walk To Water” by: Linda Sue Park conveys that to be truly happy, you must do what youn know is right, even if it is unpopular. Nya is a young girl from Sudan who helps out her family by going to a pond to get water for them. She conveys this theme when she has to bring her little sister to the pond to get water even though she knows it might take a lot longer because her sister is slower. She knows she has to teach her sister to get the water so when she get older she can help out too. “Take Akeer with you,” her mother said, nodding towards Nya’s sister. Glancing at her younger sister, Nya did not say what she was thinking: that Akeer, who was only five years old, was too small and walked too slowly. “She needs to learn,” her mother said.” This reinforces the message because it shows that even though Nya might not want to take her younger sister to the pond because she will be to slow and she likes to do it herself for the peace. She knows it’s the right thing to do so she can learn so when she grows up she can help out too. Nya and Salva’s story both convey these messages. They both show that even if you don’t like how things are sometimes you still have do them because it will help you in the long run and they know it’s the right thing to do. When Salva was younger he lived in Sudan while there was a very terrible war was going on, but he got through by helping and making very tough decisions about what to do even if they were tough. Salva conveys this message when he decides to leave the Kenya refugee camp because he didn’t feel happy there and her knew he could have a better life in the refugee camp far to the south and west. Even though her knew it would take long it would be better for him in the long run. “He had heard of another refugee camp, far to the south and west, where he hoped things would be better.” This shows how even though Salva knew it could take a long time to get there he knows it would be better and make him happier in the long run. “A Long Walk To Water” by: Linda Sue Park conveyed the message that to be truly happy, you must do what you know is right, even if its unpopular. She made this clear by showing how that they might not of liked an idea at first it made them happier after they did it and because they knew it was the right thing to do.

  13. The book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park had a theme that individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Nya is a girl from the Nuer tribe who lives in Sudan after the war; she has to fetch water for her and her family to drink. Nya is an individual because no one helps her out when she gets water. She has to walk about half of a day just to get the water. On pg.1 ch.1 it says “There was only heat, the sun already baking the air, even though it was long before noon. It would take her half the morning if she didn’t stop on the way. Heat. Time. And heat. I think this quote was so effective because it shows how 1 person (Nya) takes care of herself and her family.

Nya had a tough time getting the water and taking care of other people. Also Salva had a tough time with food and water. Salva is an 11 year old boy from the Dinka tribe. Salva lives in Sudan while the war starts. Salva leaves his family and fends for himself. On pg.66 ch.11 it says “No one shared anything with him, neither food nor company”. I believed this quote was so effective because this proved Salva was alone and he now had to beg for scraps. Individuals are able to survive in challenging environments and remarkable ways. The author Linda Sue Park showed this in many ways in a long walk to water.

  14. A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, conveys the theme that nature can present many challenges to humans. In Nya's story, she is a young girl who's job is to constantly walk back and forth to a pond which may be muddy to retrieve water for her family. Her sister and some others in the camp they are at get sick from drinking contaminated water. A man comes to her tribe with his workers to create a well that has clean, running water. Nya's story got this theme across by showing that Nya must walk everyday in order to get water that may be dirty. "The water that filled the hole was filthy, more mud than liquid. It seeped in so slowly that it took a long time to collect even a few gourds full." This quote is so effective toward reinforcing this theme because it shows how much time it takes for a basic human need. Even after all that time, she is only able to get so little water. Salva's story also gets this theme across. In his story, Slava is a boy living in a war infested Sudan and must leave his family behind him, cross the Nile River, walk across a desert, and come to a refugee camp only to be chased off to a crocodile infested river. He finally gets to another camp and is transferred to a family in America. His story gets this theme around because he had to make a huge trip with very little water and food while people had been dying all around him. "His disappearance could only mean one thing. Lion." This quote is so effective toward reinforcing this message because people are being eaten by lions when they sleep. People are picked off at night by wild animals while making a long journey for their safety. A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, states the theme in which nature can present many challenges to humans and it was made clear with people dying from sickness, wild animals, hunger, and lack of clean water.

  15. A long walk to water by Linda Sue Park shows the theme that nature can present many challenges to humans. In Nya's story, Nya had to wake up early in the morning and walk to the pond and get water to her family. Nya always gets annoyed because her family always gets sick from contaminated water. Nya had to go to the clinic and get medicine for her family. This shows Nya's theme because she had to water for her family by walking mile to the pond and get water, it would take her almost the whole morning to get to the pond and come back, the water always was dirty. Other people from different tribes came over and helped build a well so they can get water. "when the well was done, the well sprayed water into the air, Nya wasn't satisfied because the water was muddy" this quote shows that they would have to work really hard in order to gain the clean water.

  16. In the book" A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park the central idea is individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. Nya was living in Southern Sudan,2008. Where Nya lives that have a very pour water source and had to walk to the pond to get water for her and her family. Having a pour water source makes it very hard to live because you could get very sick just like Nyas sister Akeer, because the water is filled with mud and other things that are bad for you. Towards the end of the book Nya ends up with clean water and meets Salva." A stream of water flowed from the mouth of the pump. Nya held her bottle underneath the pump mouth. The bottle filled up quickly. She stepped aside to let the next person fill a bottle. Then she drank. The water was delicious. It wasn't warm or muddy, like the water from the pond. It was cool and clear." (112) This shows that even though they had a pour water source they worked really hard and got fresh clean water that wont make them sick. Salva was living in Southern Sudan,1985. In the middle of the story Salva had a challenge including crocodiles, which led him to a life threatening experience. Salva along with the rest of the people who was kicked out of the camp was lined up across the riverbank which had crocodiles in it just waiting for someone to jump in and eat. Salva jumped in the water making the ability to swim help him get across faster. Salva was in the middle of the riverbank when a boy put his hand on Salva neck and pushed him under the water which made it harder to breath. " Suddenly, the boys grip loosened, and salva launched himself upward. He threw his head back and took a huge gulp of air. For a few moments he could do nothing but gasp and choke. When his vision cleared, he saw why the boy had let go: he was floating with his head down, blood streaming from a bullet hole in the back of his neck." This explains that the boy who held Salva under the water saved his life but sadly risked his like and died. Salva had come face to face with a challenge that was life threatening but he got away from the riverbank without getting shot of attacked. These are two examples how individuals are able to survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways in the book "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park. Jennifer Lively mod:7

  17. A long walk to water by Linda sue park. The central idea of this novel is that individuals can survive in challenging environments in remarkable ways. This is the story of Nya, she is an 11 year old girl from southern Sudan how has to walk 8 hours every day to get water for her family. “She united it, she scooped up brown muddy water and drank it” this quote fits the central idea because she was survive off the water and not die. Salve is a boy from southern Sudan who also lives in the time of the war. His school gets shot at and they have to flee the school and leave there family behind. “Crack pop crack gun fire. Everyone down” this quote fits the central idea because they are in the middle are in the middle of a shoot out and have to survive it.
